Fun, simple game!

A nice game to pass the time. It gets repetitive after a while but it's still worth it if you enjoy town-building games.

Journey of a Roach
 –

Starts out cute, sours quickly

Cute art and engaging storyline. Unfortunately, as you advance through the games' stages, the puzzles become ridiculously difficult—not in a satisfying, brain-crunching kind of way, but in a totally random way that defies the game's own internal logic. If you want a smart, gorgeous, rewardingly difficult game with elegant mechanics, skip Journey of a Roach and check out Limbo instead.

The Book of Desires
 –

Dull, short but cheap

Okay firstly for .69 you can't really complain, it's a diverting hour or so....the HO scenes whilst nicely drawn can't really make up for the fact that this is a really short game, can understand why they've reduced it so extensively it would be hard to see how they could expect more than a couple of dollars for this one...ultimately you just feel like you're going back and forth all the time doing the same things, there are no suprises but a lot of tedium. Zero replayability, can't say i recommend it.

Tropico 5
 –

Classic city building with a twist

I love the Tropico series for their light sense of humor and innovative game design. I loved that this game isn't as resourse heavy as others, and runs smoothly on my computer. The game has a good amount of replayability, but sometimes the jokes do get a little old. However, I love the graphics, the design, and the interface. A truly five-star game!

The Promised Land
 –

You never know what you'll get with this game

When the game works, I enjoy it a lot. Sadly, it seems to be a complete crapshoot whether the game will work. Specifically the fort may or may not finish building and if it doesn't finish building, you really can't do the game.

This War of Mine
 –

Victims of War

'This War of Mine' is not really a game but a simulation of survival - what it is like to be the victim of warfare. Loosely based on the war in Bosnia you play 3 male characters struggling to survive in a war-torn urban landscape. You must contend with hunger, injury, sleep deprivation and death I don't know if a character ever wins because the odds of your survival are definitely slim and I've never reached a satisfactory conclusion. The game is drawn in bleak atmospheric black, grey, and white shadows and the destroyed city landscape is bleak. The characters are silhouettes that are often in shadow and dimly lit. 'This War of Mind' is an eye-opening experience for those used to games such as 'Call of Duty' and other shooters like it. Here you play the victim caught between deadly forces. Your character must daily choose between difficult moral choices in order to survive. The player must often make choices of life and death, your life and well as others. There are no correct decisions and every decision has a consequence. You eventually end up realizing that you never had real good choices in the first place.

As grim as real war, this simulation will be an eye-opener for those who have never experienced it. The developers wisely limited the reality of warfare in order to make the game playable without turning users away. It is clear that the underlining message is that warfare has many many victims but some victims are missing from gameplay. Other real victims of war such as women and children are not in the game. Adding this reality or war victimhood would probably have been too much for players to take.

The game has 2 major problems which, when fixed, will make this a 5 star game. The first problem is that the darkness of the screen and size of the text makes the game difficult to play on a small screen. My 13" MacBook screen was almost too small to play it on. My much larger iMac would have been ideal but I could not play it on my older iMac because there was not enough graphic RAM. This problem was not disclosed on all potential purchase sites. There is supposed to be a fix for this problem with the release of version 1.2 but that version is not available via the Mac App Store (version 1.02), version numbers are not given on the Mac Game Store, and the Mac Steam version is 1.22.

'This War of Mine' is highly recommended. But be careful of graphic requirements. My original purchase of this game was from the Mac App Store.

Syberia II
 –

Frustrating

Unlike helivoy, I haven't any issues saving games or using inventory, and there are quite a few save points so if you have to leave the game you just have to make sure to walk through one of the set points to save your progress. This has worked okay for me. The puzzles, however, are absurd. Several make no sense and just require a long and more or less arbitrary series of actions. (So far, for those who know the game, the lemming puzzle and the clock puzzle are especially infuriating). Any game may have one or two dud puzzles, but this is just one after another. I liked the first Syberia but this is pretty bad. And I know it is just a game, but a little bit of effort could have avoided cartoonish characters like the caricatural two-dimensional monks and the offensive portrayal of an intellectually handicapped character.

House of 1000 Doors: The Palm of Zoroaster Collector's Edition
 –

Liked it, good game.

I give it 5 stars. Fun to play. Play time was satifying. It did not take days to beat just hours. Which for me is good. There was a basic hidden object format, but the actual game play was great. The different "worlds"( for lack of a better word) were just long enough not to get boring. I found the game to be satisfying. I found myself talking to the screen while trying to get through the task. (I hope other gamers do that, and admit it LOL!). It felt good to play this game. And I was happy to play the whole game to the end without problems! I give this game 5 stars, graphics were supurb. I have recommended this game to other H.O. players! I am looking forward to the next 1000 doors!!

Heroes of Hellas 3: Athens
 –

Sadly prone to crashes

(I'm giving this three stars because if you're happy to only play up to level 6.4, it's still a pretty neat game concept; the crashes don't render it unplayable as such.)

Well, yes. Level 6.4, where you need to clear everything and ask Boreas for help three times, and every single time bar one the game locked up, grabbed 100.2% of processor power on my Macbook, and stayed there. Bar once, when I wanted to document this crash again (a year after first reporting it) and much to my suprise, was transported to the next level.
Imagine my annoyance when after finishing I started playing the bonus level and the game crashed with a failed assertion every single time I tried to play the first bonus level. Every. Single. Time.
There's much to like about this game - some of the graphics are a bit twee, but there's a storyline and varied gameplay and you can make some decisions about which buildings to erect (though they seem mainly cosmetic); tiles, boards and gameplay are well-designed (a couple of levels are a bit tedious, but this clearly has been playtested and is well balanced) - but with persistent, repeatable crashes on more than one OS I hesitated about giving it even three stars.

Diablo III
 –

Used to be passable, but has improved a lot since.

I purchased this off the official blizzard site at launch years ago and have purchased the expansion as well. It suffered from a lot of problems in its first year and as a result many of the official reviews of the game are very poor. For a better view of the game in its current form check out reviews of the expansion, Reaper of Souls.

This is a continuation of the series that popularized if not spawned the hack & slash & loot subgenre of games. Other notable games that have followed in that theme have included the very popular Borderlands series, clones like Titan Quest, and way too many others to mention.

Story: There really isn't much of a story to the entire Diablo series, but essentially evil returns and Deckard Cain and his niece(?) are trying to find the source but need your help involving the investigation of a meteor and a mysterious figure.

Gameplay: It's still very much a point and click diablo game like its predecessors, but mechanics have changed quite a bit. Most notably is the skill system which no longer depends on points but rather slotted skills that can be changed while out of combat. A lot of people were in uproar over this initially, but it definitely helps with experimenting different builds. Otherwise, this is the same diablo we know and love, the click to attack/move/pick up lootfest with the exception that gold is automatically picked up.

Design: The isometric view returns but with full 3D models, improved lighting, and overall improved graphics. Overall the visual upgrade is subtle, and quite frankly the game is by no means cutting edge on the graphics front. Nonetheless, with the newly introduced physics system there will be too much debris flying around to spend time examining textures for more than a glance. The sound is stellar as in previous iterations. The soundtrack is suitable for every location with that mix of creepy despair that the series is known for.

Overall: If you enjoyed the previous games in the series, there is no reason you shouldn't buy this. In its current form (which is nowhere near what it was at launch) it is the quintessential Diablo game.

Rescue Team 4
 –

A great game just got better!

A challenging and rewarding time management game series just got a whole lot better. Your rescue team must battle through earthquakes, landslides, snow & ice, volcanic eruptions, floods & fire in order to rescue people and pets who have become trapped or injured. The inclusion of the 'zombie geddon' and 'pet apocalypse' levels (level 29, my favourite) clearly make this game the best in the series so far. The rescue team can call up boats and helicopters to help step up the rescue efforts. All the levels are well thought out and not repetitive, all requiring slightly different tactics in order to complete the challenge in time. The inclusion of the best time recorder is excellent as this enables you to see your progress. Great fun, plenty of replay value. The sounds and effects are just right. The extra awards for playing certain levels in different ways was another positive improvement. The only odd thing about this game is the 'Jesus Moment' in level 26, but that just made me laugh so not a problem!

3D Pool - Billiards & Snooker
 –

Some ball physics are off

When playing a shot that rolls along or near the cushion at a pocket, the ball always bounces at the corner of the cushion, as though there were a piece jutting out. The physics near the holes are therefore not accurate.

Otherwise, the playability is quite good. I trust opponents past the first five are more expert players.

Where is support for this app?

Love it!

I was very hesitant to purchase this because of the previous review about glitches but I loved the first game so much that I bought this game anyway. I was very please to find that I didn't have any problems. The game is beautifully done and works perfectly on my macbook pro. I absolutely love it and can't wait for the next in the series!!!
