Stellaris: Nemesis
 –

Generally *NOT worth it

The two main features of this DLC, 10 espionage and 2) becoming the Crisis are not worth the price of admission. Espionage is both unwieldy and severely undercooked and becoming is an overpowered, albeat fun, more or less one shot deal.

* If you're a big fan of playing the big bad disregard this review, if not, go buy the myriad of other Stellaris DLC first.

Stellaris: Federations
 –

Teamwork makes the Dream work

THE Stellaris politics expansion. If you love telling everyone what to do make sure you buy this.

The one caveat is that the namesake federations take WAY to long to properly develop, so make sure you use the origin that lets you start in a federation if you truly want to reap the benefits of being in one.

Stellaris: Overlord

Straight up Necessary

If you want to win at Stellaris this is the one DLC you need to buy.

One could argue that vassalage is straight up hilariously OP (and find no argument anywhere in the community) but it is also bonkers fun, and a little easier on the insane endgame micro.

The origin is also great fun, but played properly one of the most overpowered ones, so beware if you dislike powergaming.

Caveat is that base game vassalage works great as well, and federations if you have that DLC become borderline useless, they take to long to set up and the Vassalage system is just much more robust and faster to set up.

Stellaris: Humanoids Species Pack
 –

Do you like Clones?

Portrait packs are always fun to make your game more diverse and allow you to live out your space alien fantasies.

This one also unlocks the Clone Army Origin which is both a Star Wars trope and one of the single most overpowered origins in the game as of right now.

Necessary no, none of the portrait packs are, fun, most certainly

Stellaris: Distant Stars Story Pack

Space Monsters

If you like having some interaction with space monsters buy this.

If space dragons are not your jam leave this be.

Stellaris: Necroids Species Pack

To die for

Portrait packs are always fun to make your game more diverse and allow you to live out your space alien fantasies. As cosmetics are mostly an item of personal taste i will not discuss them in this review, other than to say i personally like them a lot.

All the civics of this pack are not worth it anymore from a power perspective, with the exception of the insanely powerfull Cordyceps one for hive minds if RNG is on your side.

The origin Necrophage is very cool thematically and still after all the nerfs powerfull, a fun one to do a playtrough with for sure.

If you are however looking for vampires, mummies and other undead, or even just a undead trait this pack will not help you out, so buyer beware.

Overall necessary no, none of the portrait packs are, fun, most certainly.

Stellaris: Lithoids Species Pack

Rocking It

Portrait packs are always fun to make your game more diverse and allow you to live out your space alien fantasies.

Lithoid species bring some interesting game mechanics in that they can live almost anywhere and eat minerals, albeit at the cost of growth. All these factors will have big consequences for how you will develop your early empire, making them an interesting deviation from the norm.

The origin is not very interesting, but also not the main draw of this pack if you ask me.

Overall necessary no, none of the portrait packs are, fun, most certainly.

Stellaris: Toxoids Species Pack

For Gloria!

Portrait packs are always fun to make your game more diverse and allow you to live out your space alien fantasies. As cosmetics are mostly an item of personal taste i will not discuss them in this review, other than to say i personally like them a lot.

All the civics of this pack are not worth it from a power perspective. The Ascension perk is both dissapointing and worthless.

But why then a 5 star rating you ask?

The origin Knights of the Toxic God. A grand and harrowing tale of a people's quest for the divine, as told in Arthurian questing fashion, wielded by the most purgeable filth you've ever seen in Stellaris (probably). Simply the best (humoristic) storytelling stellaris has produced to date, and i love it. It also happens to be hilariously OP after a somewhat difficult start, so if you're looking for that insane Stellaris tall build, here it is.

If you are however looking for colonizing gas giants and toxic worlds this DLC will not make that happen, so buyer beware.

Overall necessary no, none of the portrait packs are, epic fun, most certainly.

Stellaris: Aquatics Species Pack

Under the sea .. of stars?

Portrait packs are always fun to make your game more diverse and allow you to live out your space alien fantasies. As cosmetics are mostly an item of personal taste i will not discuss them in this review, other than to say i personally like them a lot.

All the civics of this pack are not worth it from a power perspective, roleplay only. The ascension perk is mostly a reskin from World Shaper, fun, but hardly necessary.

The origins are thematic. Ocean Paradise is more or less a watery giant Gaea world playtrough but the real money is with There be Dragons, cuz dragons. And lots of hijinks ensued.

The aquatic trait used to be very good, nowadays its just great but most certainly thematic.

Overall necessary no, none of the portrait packs are, fun, most certainly.
