One of the best shooters I've ever played
F.E.A.R. has the most challenging and intense gameplay of any FPS I've ever played. The enemy AI is really smart, and I was on my toes at all times in the main game and the expansions. That's the real reason to play this game. I'd recommend playing on Extreme difficulty because it's immensely satisfying to use all the tools at your disposal to defeat enemies. On normal you can almost sleepwalk through the game.
The horror elements can be terrifying at times, and despite having an arsenal of powerful weapons I still found myself freaked out often. I do wish that the game wouldn't signal so much when a jump scare was about to happen, like playing that really loud high pitched sound, or having a character remind you of your missing squadmate every time his ghost appears. It would've contributed to the horror if these things were toned down a bit and the player was left in the dark.
The story is interesting and I did like it, especially in the expansions. It's unfortunate that those aren't canon but I'm still very much looking forward to playing F.E.A.R. 2 to find out more.
Some of the voice actors were questionable which sometimes took me out of it. Luckily Fettels voice actor did a pretty good job, and he's the person you'll be listening to the most.
The graphics have actually aged surprisingly well. Though the character models are definitely questionable, the environment and weapons are still pretty well done, so it hardly feels dated.
Overall, this is a really good shooter that was very satisfying to play.
