VED

Magical world and interesting combat*****

VED is a quite different game to your usual RPGs. Visually it looks like a Visual Novel, but the combat is rather involved. The battle is split into different sections or lanes, and most abilities move you either to the left or right. This creates an involved way to dodge attacks that you usually do not see in turn based games.

Age of Wonders 4: Premium Edition
 –

Constantly Improving*****

Age of Wonders is a series with a lot of history. As such there is a lot for the devs to fall back to and a lot of expectations for fans to reasonably have. At the same time, every Age of Wonders game has changed the formula and tried something new.
Not everything new always works, especially now that games are so much more complex, but devs also have the chance to improve things after launch.

Age of Wonders 4 had a lot of great new ideas. It also had some ideas that weren't good. With the free updates, a lot of the issues the game had at launch have been addressed. The one issue people will always have can't be: by making this the best 4X Dress-up game, all the aesthetic choices will always be just aesthetic.

Probably no other game gives you this much choice in forming your own people. But it comes at the cost that these choices can end up seeming meaningless, as you always have all choices.

Fair Warning: the game is already in its second DLC Season Pass. So if you are new to this and eventually want all of it, the total may end up triple the price of the base game.
