Total War™: WARHAMMER® II – The Twisted & The Twilight
 –

If you like the Skaven, get this DLC

The Skaven have quite a fun addition with the mutagen. Lots to enjoy with that feature. I would only recommend this DLC if you're into the Skaven.

Risk of Rain 2
 –

A serviceable roguelike

I'm a huge fan of roguelikes - Slay the Spire, Enter the Gungeon, Binding of Isaac etc. This game just doesn't really sink its teeth into me like those other games.

I think where Risk of Rain 2 kind of falters is in what abilities you get, and how those abilities are given to you. It's a bit of a slog to get started in a RoR2 run. The fun of the game comes from having a ton of stacked abilities/variations of abilities later on. Most abilities on their own are fairly generic and pretty bland (gain life after a kill, do some fire damage when shooting, run faster when not fighting etc).. Getting a single powerup rarely is a gamechanger, and is not very exciting on its own.

RoR2 is about the quantity of powerups, whereas the other games mentioned above have a more interesting quality of powerups. I rarely feel let down when grabbing a new gun or powerup in EtG or BoI since each pickup is meaningful. In RoR2 the fun is later in the runs when all 30 of your powerups make you unstoppable.

RoR2 is still unique each run, and the different characters are fun to play around with. I just feel like this genre has been done much better elsewhere. The 3D aspect is interesting, but it by no means makes this a better game than those mentioned above.

I'd give it a 3.5 if this site allowed because its not a bad game by any stretch, its just not a standout in its field.

XCOM®: Chimera Squad
 –

X-COM lite

Tl:Dr - Love XCOM2 and the WoTC DLC? This game doesnt come close to those. Maybe just go back to those games to scratch your itch.

Although I have to admit the cheap price (at launch at least) gives this some points, it doesnt save this game completely. Theres just something slightly off with the way it plays. The new turn based combat isn't terrible, but I think it's a case of " it's not broken, so why did you fix it?" While it still gives you that new tactical angle of navigating the order of combat in a bite sized map, it's just not as satisfying as XCOM 2. The breach mechanic is actually pretty unique, but after doing it constantly throughout the game, it loses a lot of its luster mid to late game.

There is some decent progression in abilities and equipment, and most classes have some good fun, but overall, this game just feels like a bit of an unnecessary shoe in. I think it would have made a lot more sense as DLC to the XCOM 2 sandbox.

If this game isn't on sale, I can't recommend it.

Fun game!

This game has quite a learning curve, but that makes each small achievement that much more exciting.

Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth – The Collection
 –

Still a Civ game at heart

This game got some bad reviews, but I enjoy Civ, so I thought I'd wait for the collection to drop in price. At the end of the day this is still the addictive, 'just one more turn' game I expect from Fraxis. It's not alpha centauri 2, it's more like a Civ 5.5...in space. If you enjoy Civ games, for the right price this is a fun one to play.

XCOM 2: War of the Chosen
 –

DLC that's actually worth your time

I played and finished the XCOM 2 twice, enjoying every minute of it. It was fun while it lasted but I felt the game was losing its excitement, so I was a bit apprehensive to pump quite a bit of money into it with War of the Chosen. I have no regrets now that I have been playing it. From my perspective, its probably best to finish XCOM 2 (base game) before giving this a whirl since there is quite a bit going on with this expansion and I know that I would not have appreciated this fully otherwise. That being said, there is a lot of content to keep you playing for a long time. The new classes give your games a different feel, and the teammate abilities are fun to unlock. There's so much new to the game now that it 'almost' feels like a new iteration. The chosen can be kind of annoying, but since I have already played the base game so much, it is a welcome challenge and change up. This is probably only the 2nd or 3rd DLC I've ever purchased, and I have to say this is well worth the money. Pretty much XCOM 2.5!

Cities: Skylines
 –

Fun, but a bit easy

This is a great game, the graphics are great and it definitely scratches the creation itch you might have. That being said I feel the game doesn't have a lot in the way of a challenge. I'm by no means a great city creator, but my city is thriving and I haven't put much thought into it to be honest. It's my first trial by fire run and I'm killing it...kind of takes away my motivation to start a new city. All that being said, there are a ton of micromanagement options for those who like delving deep so it has potential to eat up your life. Fun game but be weary of the longevity if you're a casual. 8.5/10

Company of Heroes 2
 –

RTS to the max!

My first company of heroes game and I am not disappointed! I was a bit concerned about the RTS elements at first since it is quite different than a standard RTS, but once I got the hang of it, things started to click. The game heavily rewards tactics and well though out attacks. Conversely, it punishes you for being mindless. Due to its tactical nature it can be a bit overwhelming and frustrating, but it leads to some gratifying games if you can pull through the adversity. Games can last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes long, so if you're looking for a quick game you should look elsewhere. I really like this game and would highly recommend if you're a strategy person. 9/10
