Sid Meier's Civilization® VI: Digital Deluxe Edition
 –

Another great entry in the series

Civ 6 is like a mixture of the design sensibilities of Civs 4 and 5, maintaining many of Civ 5's mechanics (most notably the 1 unit per tile rule) but restoring some of the flexibility of the earlier games in the series. And the new district mechanic is a fantastic feature for those of us who enjoy the process of building our empires rather than just smashing others. It's not perfect, no Civ game has been, but as a fan of the series since Civ 2 I found this to be a fresh and fun new take on the formula.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - Rising Tide
 –

Good, but not great

Rising Tide fleshes out the game and certainly helps Beyond Earth feel more distinct from Civ 5. The new diplomacy model and the adjustments to affinities and quests are the best the features, and the new leaders do provide at least some variation to who you'll encounter on the new world, although there really should have been more than just 4. It doesn't address one of my main complaints about Beyond Earth though, the fact that the victory types are too similar and just uninteresting.

Stellaris
 –

Good, but still needs a little more

The early game in Stellaris is the best of any strategy game I've ever played. The feeling of exploration as your science ships chart new solar systems and relay their adventures back to you is just magical. Sadly, once you reach the mid-game you are unable to explore further due to being boxed in, and there's little left to do other than go to war with your neighbours. Patches and DLC have addressed the mid-game lull to some extent, but it still feels a bit bare compared to Paradox's other excellent strategy games.

That being said, the New Horizons mod turns Stellaris into the best Star Trek game ever made. Trekkies should get the game just for that.
